REMNANTS OF THE PAST
for Piano Quartet (Violin, Viola, Cello and Piano)
by W. Brent Sawyer
composed 6/28/22
approx. length: 9:30 minutes
This piece was inspired by and dedicated to Sister Marie-Therese Swiezynski
This piece is written in what I call … a nouveau classique style - meaning It sounds kinda classical and kinda modern - with a dash of jazz thrown in as well. Hence the Title… Remnants of the Past.
In fact there are several different styles used within the piece. Most of the piece is written in an energetic 6/8 time with a reoccurring melancholy 3/4 section and there is a short nostalgic interlude in 4/4. The piece uses a 5 note turn around swirl as it's melodic germ. The end section uses exciting uprising arpeggios and upward scales in modulating keys.
